So there was a distinctive air of Memphis creeping around this years Salone de Mobile 2017, only this time the trashy colours from the original design movement have gone and so too have the plastic and disposable finishes, it is now only the shapes that remain. Which I must say, is a damned sight easier to live with than the Original Memphis colour schemes. I remember the clashing and saturated colors and laminates which peaked from 1981 to 1987 . What I enjoyed about the original movement was its rebellion against the streamlined and tasteful design from previous eras, a total postmodern up yours and celebration of design freedom in strong geometric motifs and pattern. Todays NEO Memphis resurgence seems a little tamer, it´s a definate nod to new post millenials love for all things vintage and is actually rather sophisticated. With not a scrap of formica in sight, Neo Memphis is all about geometry, rich materials, marble, mat brass and muted colour paletes. Check out some of the decor and furniture in this years Salone di Mobile and you´ll get what I mean.
The old adage that furniture follows fashion was remarkably true of this year´s Salone di Mobile 2017.
I loved the amount of “Scatter Tables” in this years Salone di Mobile in Milan. What really excited me in this years Milan fair was the possibility to mix and match colours, finishes and shapes into little clusters of tables, it gives you freedom to play and compose. There seem to be an amazing variety of beautiful little tables that you can use like jewels to inject some colour, variety and spice into your living space. I love the idea of laying on a low slung sofa and pulling in a little scatter table or two to perch your plate on. Long large tables seem to be on their way out and these more mobile and convenient tables seem to be on their way in. Check out the variety of finishes in different textures, marbles and delicate metal legs.
A trend for handmade is nothing new indeed its become something of a stable in the Milan Furniture fair for the last decade years or so
Plants, plants and more plants, finally!! At this years Milan Furniture fair 2017 it was harder to find a stand that didnt have plants than that did. Vertical walls, lots of sculptural prickly pear cacti and of course hanging plants that have been trending for the last three years. I can´t get enough of it.
